Consumption Metrics, Chew Rate

How fun last year seeing a lovable herd of goats chewing their way through overgrown weeds and other vegetation growing wild along scenic trails surrounding a California community association. Surely the herd would be back again this year. But no. This year, the work was being done by tractor-powered mowing machines, "really nifty" equipment capable of trimming "weeds even in those hard-to-reach rutty, rocky places," according to an article in the community association's monthly publication. "That's okay when there's a range of options for clearing wild vegetation, either a herd of goats or mowing equipment."

But the article's author wonders "how the goats might have been informed about the change in plans. Maybe the herd's team leader -- a goat named Billy? -- stops by for a chat with the boss. And maybe the boss says something like...

"Billy, your team crushed it last year! Outstanding numbers! I'm sure you've seen the spreadsheets and flow charts. Your team's consumption metrics, its chew rate, exceeded prior-year chew by 15%. You left everyone in your dust. With numbers like that, doubling your territory was on our drawing board. Goat power, my friend, that's our mantra as you well know.

"But you know what they say, that the only thing that is constant is change. Didn't the Greek philosopher Heraclitus mention that? Well, that's the challenge for us right now, Billy. There are some headwinds this year, but no worries. We're laser-focused on what we need to do going forward. We're pedal to the metal, I can assure you. So stay focused and goal-oriented. Keep everyone fired up. Make sure your teammates never lose their appetite for this business.

"By the way, Billy, How's your 401k? Is your resume up to date? Just asking!"

In several posts, we've been talking about prepared statements...how they might sometimes help HOA boards deal with tough questions from homeowners and even -- heaven forbid! -- tough questions from the news media. We're often asked if prepared statements are nothing but PR spin. People sometimes cringe at the mention of spin. Actually, a prepared statement is measured words in a measured response. What's preferable? Measured words or words blurted out in the heat of the moment?
